Eating Out: Restaurants - Penne d'Agenais
There are 6 restaurants in the nearby village of Penne d'Agenais, about 5-minutes drive; four restaurants on the outside of the bastide town walls, two inside the walls:
Maison Sur La Place - hidden behind a grey door at the back of the main car park, Maison Sur La Place is probably the best restaurant in Penne d'Agenais, its décor is North African inspired - and so is the cuisine. You can dine outside in a private square behind the tourist office
La Peyragude with its pavement tables is at least as good but more traditionally French with a well priced daily menu. Watch out for Tuesday or Wednesday closure
Inside the walls is Café des Arts which serves excellent savoury pancakes - Galettes - with English-styled fillings
Le Bombecul - Al fresco dining in front of the beautiful Marie under parasols
There's also a couple of shops, the tourist office, marie with an exhibition space plus a good butchers which is also the local Depot du Pain
There's also a gourmet restaurant on the way into Penne called L'air du Temps
And new is Le Patio de Haute Ville open Wednesdays to Sunday, where you can start with an aperitif in the courtyard [patio in French] and then dine in doors or on the patio [terrace in French] overlooking fantastic views [but not as good as the views from La Rouquette]. Very contemporary
Eating Out: Restaurants elsewhere
In the other direction is Le Moulin, Dausse, a gourmet restaurant run by Dutch in the French style. They do a sampler menu for a fixed price of Euro.28 which is a gastronomic experience
Chateau de l'Hoste is a slow and lazy, traditional French hotel - it is worth having an aperitif with canapés in the gardens under the shade of the trees, even if you go on to eat at the Café du Centre, Roquecor bar or Chez Kadie
Popular with English and Dutch, Café du Centre in Roquecor 05 63 95 21 78 is good for watching rugby, playing pool or sometimes just listening to live music on a Sunday afternoon. The menu is supposed to be very good prepared by a Michelin trained chef
Chateau de l’Hoste also runs their offfces from an art gallery in Roquecor called Grenier des Artists – very worth a visit if you’re over that way
Chez Khadi on the main road in Lacardayre is definitely for 'sitting in' - so a good choice for a day when the weathe's not so good, excellent food cooked by the resident North African. Watch out for Tuesday or Wednesday closure
Tortonis in Villeneuve is the café to see in and be seen at. They also do a very good mid day set lunch
There’s also a very good Chinese – Vietnamese-Chinese actually in Villeneuve called L'Escale d’Asie – they speak English
